Chesapeake Ohio
Working with Dr. Menashi Cohenford
Zachary Tackett is identifying new strains of antibiotic resistant
bacteria using a brand new method. The Ibis T5000 Biosensor System is
based on the fact that certain regions of an organism's genome are very
important to the function of key genes and, as a result, are highly
conserved as organisms evolve. The Ibis T5000 Biosensor System looks
for unique DNA sequences in samples, weighs them with mass
spectrometry, and compares the resulting weights against a database of
organisms. This process allows the Ibis T5000 biosensor to rapidly
identify any of the many thousands of species of bacteria, as well as previously
unknown agents.
