Deborah Preston is a 38 year old non-traditional Biology Major 
originally from Niagara Falls, NY.  She now resides in Huntington, WV 
and has called the Huntington area home for more than 10 years.  She is 
expanding her SURE research this year to include cardiovascular disease 
in the aged.   Cardiovascular disease is responsible for more than 30% 
of all deaths worldwide and is the number one cause of death in the 
rapidly growing population of elderly individuals.  Recent data 
suggests that cardio-protective agents which act as antioxidants may be 
helpful in preventing or reversing the affects of normal age related 
cardiovascular disease.  Her work this summer is aimed at determining 
if a specific medication is helpful in preventing or reversing 
age-related cardiac dysfunction.  It is anticipated that the results 
from this work may be useful in justifying other studies designed to 
help identify whether the antioxidant therapy may be an effective 
treatment strategy to combat age-associated cardiovascular disease
