The research supported by SURE is a part of a series of studies that
began in the summer of 2007, as part of a multi-study examination of the
effect of media representations of violent victimizations on people’s
perceptions of risk. These studies enable us to better understand the
relationship of violent media on people’s perception of risk to the
self and to others. We have completed an archival analysis of a crime
drama, and we have piloted experimental work that investigates the link
between media representations of violence and people’s estimates of
risk. In the archival work, we have found that men are overrepresented
in television’s portrayal of violent sexual victimization compared to
FBI reports of similar crimes. In the experimental work, we have found
that depictions of male victims make men estimate lower rates of risk
for men and for women, whereas depictions of either male or females
make women feel more vulnerable to sexual violence.
The SURE program will support several projects. The first of these is
presenting results of the completed portions of these studies at the
APA’s Div. 9 biennial conference (Society for the Psychological Study
of Social Issues; SPSSI) in Chicago in June, 2008. The second is in
analyzing and writing up the results of a related examination of real
violent events on people’s risk perception, and both for presentation
at another national conference. Because it is not directly part of the
series, the real violence study can be written up for publication.
Finally, this funding supports data collection another study in the
series on media representations so that the multi-study publication can
be written up for publication over the coming academic year. |
