Assistant Professor Robert Rabe, in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, was announced as the winner of the 2012 Wally Eberhard Award by the American Journalism Historians Association during the AJHA national conference in Raleigh, N.C., on October 12.  The Eberhard Award is given each year to the author of the best new paper on mass media during wartime.  Rabe’s paper, titled “This is a Dirty, Brutal War and There is No Reason Why the Public Should Not Know It”:  Marquis W. Childs and the Debate over Vietnam before the Tet Offensive,” is a study of a liberal newspaper columnist who used his column to support President Lyndon Johnson’s domestic civil rights and anti-poverty agenda, but ultimately broke with the president over the Vietnam War.  It also examines the breakdown of the Cold War consensus among liberal foreign policy thinkers in the 1960s.  The American Journalism Historians Association is the nation’s largest scholarly organization dedicated to research and teaching in journalism and mass communications history.
