Assistant Professor Robert Rabe of the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communication will present a paper at the American Journalism Historians Association National Conference, held in Raleigh, NC, Oct. 11-14. Rabe’s paper is titled “This is a Dirty, Brutal War and There is No Reason Why the Public Should Not Know It”: Marquis W. Childs and the Debate over Vietnam Before the Tet Offensive. It examines the escalating debate about deepening American involvement in the Vietnam War through the syndicated newspaper column of Marquis Childs. Childs was a Cold War liberal who generally supported American anti-communist foreign policy, but he began to cast serious doubts on the war long before the 1968 Tet Offensive, which many people describe as the turning point when opinion about the war shifted.
