If I Were Seventeen Again and Other
Essays
contains seventeen pieces that Jesse Stuart
drew from his autobiographical works,
in which he addressed his views on
education, the value of rural life, and
the opportunities for young people in
the United States. Stuart feels that even if
schools are poor, as was his one-room
school at Plum Grove, students still have
every opportunity for success, and today
most student have education handed to
them on a platter, and they don’t have
to fight for an education like he did.
