Hold April was Jesse Stuart’s
his fifth published book of poetry. The
year previous to the publication of this
small volume of poems, Stuart was
awarded a $5000 prize from the American
Academy of Poets, representing up to
that date the largest such grant given
to a poet by the organization. One
reviewer called Hold April “a
beautiful book, a rare book, with its
own golden place in our too-often
shadowy literature” (Richardson,
Jesse, p.
421).
