Fulham, an Englishman, signed on to the CSS Alabama by James Bullock when it was under construction. He became convinced of the Confederate cause and joined the ship’s crew. He was given charge of the ship’s prisoners. His journal became the first published account of the Alabama’s service– The Cruise of the Alabama (Liverpool, 1863). After the war, he worked on a number of maritime vessels as a master mate and a navigator. He was lost at sea in 1879 while commanding the steamer, Marlborough, leaving a wife and a large family.
