HLC Open Pathways Project: Activity 3

Full instructions for Activity 3 can be found in the Activity 3 Presentation.

Step 1 - Basic program detail including point of contact information and program mission. Also, programs should state how their program mission supports both the University's Mission and their College's Mission.

Step 2 - Learning outcomes will be defined along with the two assessment points for each outcome. Along with defining the assessment points and the form of assessment, programs must set what benchmark level students should be at upon the time of that assessment point.

Step 3 - Each learning outcome will have a rubric created for it which will be used during the assessment points.

Step 4 - Results & Analysis. The results of assessment on each trait followed by an Analysis/Action Plan to improve student learning.

Step 1 - Base Program Information

The first step of Activity 3 is to provide basic information for the program including the name and email address of the creator of this document. Also, a Program Mission Statement and how that Mission supports the College and University Mission Statements is necessary.

Support for University and College Missions

Marshall University is a multi-campus public university providing innovative undergraduate and graduate education that contributes to the development of society and the individual. The University actively facilitates learning through the preservation, discovery, synthesis, and dissemination of knowledge.University Mission

As part of Activity 3, Programs must state their Program Mission and specify how this mission supports both the University's Mission as well as any Mission that the College the Program is housed under happens to have.

Step 2 - Learning Outcomes

In Activity 2, Programs were tasked with modifying their learning outcomes so that they will align with the Degree Profile. Before moving further with Activity 3, it is necessary to make sure that those program learning outcomes are defined below. Each learning outcome will eventually have a rubric crafted and defined for assessment (completed in Step 3).

Step 3 - Rubric Definition

For each learning outcome that was defined in Step 2, an associated rubric will now need to be created to be able to assess the learning outcome.

While in Activity 2 rubrics were allowed to have as many traits and as many performance levels as desired (to a certain degree), in Activity 3 rubrics will be given a more standardized template to work with. The number of traits is still open ended, but each rubric will now need to make use of four performance levels: Introductory, Milestone, Capstone, and Advanced. For Graduate programs, it may only be necessary to fill in two of the four levels defined.

Step 4 - Results Reporting

The fourth step of this activity is to begin collecting and reporting the data concerning assessment of your learning outcomes. The raw numbers you report in this step will be used in your final assessment report to calculate percentages. Please make sure you are reporting RAW aggregate and NOT percentages of students who achieve at each level.

Step 5 - Analysis and Planned Action

The fifth step of this activity is to explain your analysis of the results collected in Step 4 and to outline planned action to improve student performance for each learning outcome at both assessment points.

Step 6 - Summary and Additional Commentary

The final step of this activity is (if necessary) to provide a summary of the analysis for all of your learning outcomes as well as provide any additional commentary or narrative that you feel is necessary to round out your assessment report.
