The following items are required for all students applying for the MU Doctoral Programs in Education. All application materials should be on file in the ODPE (Office of Doctoral Programs in Education) two months prior to the term the student desires admission to allow for time for processing and consideration by the faculty.
Suggested application submission dates for upcoming terms:
- Application for Spring 2013 – November 4, 2012
- Application for Summer 2013 – March 15, 2013
- Submit the Marshall Univesity Application for Graduate Admission
- Use the appropriate major code
- Higher Education Administration (Major code GEJ1)
- Public School Administration (Major code GEJ2)
- Community College Administration (Major code GEJ3)
- Curriculum and Instruction (Major code GEK0)
- Use the appropriate major code
- Send official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work to the Marshall University Graduate Admissions Office, 100 Angus E. Peyton Drive, South Charleston, WV 25303.
3. Admissions Test Score
- Official test scores from either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test(MAT) must be no older than five (5) years and sent to the MU Graduate Admissions Office at the address above.

4. Goal Statement
- Provide a goal statement, written in essay format, (500-750 words) which addresses the following topics:
- Your professional aspirations 5-10 years from now
- Professional experiences that provide a basis for your contributions to the program
- How the Doctoral Degree in Education fits into your professional growth plan
- Personal strengths that will aid you in the Ed.D. program
- Other information you deem relevant to your application to the Ed.D. program
Your ability to synthesize to the level required for work in this advanced degree will be assessed as will the appropriateness of your goals as they relate to the objectives of the Ed.D. program.
- Provide a current professional vita or resume which includes:
- Current address, contact numbers and email addresses (please include your Marshall University email address if you have one)
- Work experience
- Publications (if applicable)
- Complete part 1 of the Recommendation Form provided.
- Send to three references for completion. These must be mailed directly from the reference to the Office of Doctoral Programs in Education. Letters of recommendation or forms other than the “Recommendation Form for the Doctor of Education Program” will not be accepted.
- At least one of the references should be a member of the academic community, and at least one of the references should be an individual with a comparable terminal degree.
- The interview provides the faculty with the opportunity to closely examine your qualifications and goals beyond the printed materials submitted in the application.
- Applicants who meet the aforementioned criteria and have all materials on file will be invited to interview.
- If you are invited to interview:
- Be prepared to discuss your qualifications and interests, and to answer questions from the faculty.
- Doctoral program faculty will use an established rubric to evaluate the applicant.
- This rubric score will be used along with the previous items to determine admission.
A letter will be sent after the initial admissions screening advising each applicant of the action taken. Applicants who do not meet the minimum criteria for admission will not be invited to interview. Those who wish to be reconsidered should submit a written request prior to the next application period. Records of applicants who are not admitted will be maintained on file in the ODPE for a period of one year.
Following the interview of qualified applicants and consideration of the admissions materials, program faculty will make admissions decisions. A letter will be sent after this admissions meeting advising each interviewed applicant of the action taken. Being invited to interview does not guarantee admission to the program.
