Eric Arnold, PhD, Associate Professor, who has 7 years of academic experience teaching in the Marshall University, School of Kinesiology, BS and MS academic programs in Exercise Science (Exercise Physiology concentration area), joined the School of Physical Therapy in January, 2012. Dr. Arnold earned his PhD in Sport Science/Exercise Physiology with a cognate area in Biology/Endocrinology in 2008 from Georgia State University. Since joining Marshall University, he completed additional research training and work with the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center, Center for Diagnostic Nanosystems under the guidance of Eric R. Blough, Ph.D., (Associate Professor and Director) in the area of Integrative Physiology learning and utilizing tools, such as tissue histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, protein assays, gel electrophoresis, performing animal surgery, and tissue processing for addressing research questions related to skeletal muscle plasticity (adaptations). Developing a strong relationship with the center's personnel will help forge significant research ties/interaction between the Physical Therapy Department faculty and students and the Center for Diagnostic Nanosystems. Dr. Arnold also completed additional research training in learning and utilizing Gel Electrophoresis for separating Myosin Heavy and Light Chains in skeletal muscle at The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry, Department of Oral Biology, Muscle Biophysics Laboratory under the guidance of Peter J. Reiser, Ph.D., (Professor and Director). Dr. Arnold has published two peer reviewed journal articles, coauthored two book chapters, six abstracts and had eleven peer reviewed presentations, and received 11 internal and external grants. His doctoral dissertation addressed research questions related to skeletal muscle plasticity in the Obese Zucker Rat (Leprfa) Plantaris muscle subjected to mechanical overload. His most recent area of research addressed the impact of mechanical overload on myosin light chain expression in the Obese Zucker Rat (Leprfa ) Plantaris and Soleus muscles, respectively. Consequently, in his future line of research, he plans to pursue the impact of resistance training on skeletal muscle plasticity at the molecular level in patients with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Arnold's background education in both exercise physiology and biological science, research, teaching and practical/clinical experience in exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and human performance have prepared him well to teach the Advanced Clinical Physiology, Exercise Physiology and Therapeutic Rehabilitation as well as aspects of Medical Pathology within the DPT program. He has successfully developed and taught advanced graduate level courses in Advanced Exercise Physiology (Cardiorespiratory, Metabolic, Neuromuscular and Environmental Adaptations), Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology, and Respiratory Exercise Physiology, all areas that are vitally important to be included at an advanced level in a physical therapy curriculum. His students have consistently given him high marks on course evaluation scores and have commented on his enthusiasm in the classroom.
