Overview

The Basic Science Division of the Center for Diagnostic Nanosystems helps to provide the foundation upon which the Translation Research and Nanomedicine divisions stand. Basic research into the fundamental mechanisms of cellular physiology, pathophysiology, and cell signal transduction are at the foundation of almost all clinical knowledge. Current efforts in this division are centered on the following areas of inquiry:
• Effects of aging on skeletal muscle
• Effects of aging on the cardiovascular system
• How insulin resistance affects skeletal muscle plasticity
• Development of the Caenorhabditis elegans model system for biomedical research.
In addition to its research activities, the Basic Science Division also oversees the functioning of the Biomedical Research Facility of the CDN that has been developed to support the research efforts of the Translational Research, the Nanomedicine Divisions of the center, and various research efforts within in t he centers associated facilities.
